fanmix: btvs heroes

January 18th, 2008 (01:44 am)

This is a compilation I made for fanmix, the theme being "We Could Be Heroes (Just For One Day)." I liked the dichotomy of that sentence, it starts out seemingly optimistic and then reveals its bittersweet reality. Buffy epitomized the duality of the hero's role and the toll it takes on personal growth and relationships. I started out the mix upbeat and steadily worked my way from the outer accomplishments to the inner turmoil.

MY TOP 8!!1!

1 Fido I was hesitent at first because it seemed like someone got a great idea from the end of Sean of the Dead & then just made a movie about it. Well so what? It was clever, sweet, funny, and gorey. Everything you need from a film (minus the sex, but that's covered by...)
2 I'm Not There I honestly don't know much about Bob Dylan, but it was entertaining, thought provoking, poetic, and beautiful.
3 Juno With all the hype I couldn't help but feel disapointed, it was uneven and too "clever," but it was still sweet and charming & had Michael Cera in gold shorts.
4 Ratatouille Pixar can do no wrong.
5 28 Weeks Later Super depressing, thrilling, suspensful, neurotic. The scariest most realistic zombies & better than 28 Days Later.
6 The Ten Ridiculous nonsensical fun humor in 10 overlapping shorts based ever so not on the 10 commandments.
7 Waitress The idea of Pie Diners is just really romantic to me.
8 Darjeeling LTD Everyone thought this was the worst Wes Anderson but whatever I'm not into him anyway - he's too cold, distant, self involved, even cruel (as a filmmaker & his characters) and while this movie had all of those aspects, the whole film felt like a thaw.

Sweeny Todd, Lars and the Real Girl, Grinhouse (Planet Terror), Simpsons,

1 Jens Lekman "Night Falls Over Kortedala"
2 Modest Mouse "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank"
3 Andrew Bird "Armchair Apocrypha"
4 Feist "The Reminder"
5 Sunset Rubdown "Random Spirit Lover"
6 The Shaky Hands "Shaky Hands"
7 Dr. Dog "We All Belong"
8 New Pornographers "Challengers"

Stars "In Our Bedroom After the War" Once "Soundtrack" Beirut "Flying Club Cup" Okkervil River "Stage Names" M.I.A. "Kala" LCD Soundsystem "Sound of Silver" Arcade Fire "Neon Bible" Shins "Wincing the Night Away"

My major fandom has always been Buffy. I've watched it since I was in elementary school, and now I'm in college. It's been a long and tumultuous ride. I can remember sitting down to watch episodes ten minutes before they started, so as not to miss anything. And even all the way back in season one, some friends came to visit from out of state and I convinced everyone to go back to the hotel for a while, with plans to catch the show on their television. The episode was The Puppet Show. I've been thinking about the things I like and why, a lot. I'm not sure if it was because I watched Buffy so religiously that I'm conditioned a certain way, or if I was always interested and provoked by certain things, and this drew me in to Buffy. There are some things I can say for sure I took away from Buffy. For example, the end of Beneath You really made me appreciate and think about what storytelling and entertainment can do for your emotions. Up until then I had experienced the main things movies and television shows tend to convey: suspense in romance and horror, tearjerk-y sadness, and laughter. Suddenly with the final scene of Beneath You I felt my stomach drop and twist, this was not a feeling any form of entertainment had ever made me feel before. It made me think of the whole gamut of emotions that seemed to be neglected by the entertainment industry, and I wanted to do them, I wanted to twist people's stomachs in knots, or give them shivers, or leave them unable to escape going over something in their heads a billion times. Beneath You haunted me so incredibly that I worked myself up so much by next week that Same Time, Same Place couldn't be anything but a disappointment at the time. Speaking of haunting:
